Mt. Biking: Evans Cycles Trailfinder - Woburn Wind Direction: NA Wind Stength: NA Surf / Sea State: NA Air Temperature: 16 Sea Temperature: NA Weather: Squally Showers Max Speed: 32 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 35.2 (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise)
Met at Little Brickhill for the Trailfinders organised ride. Colin, Neil,
Mike M and myself. We had already decided to do the longer ride of 32m. At
9:15 we were off, after a brief heavy shower that made everyone check their
waterproofs were in. The first climb was up Church Road then right along
the bridle path. I would have preferred the straight up approah, but the
course went down in the clay. It was thick and gloopy and after only 5 mins
the bike was already well clogged. Up to the top and we headed down the
road, but we all missed the LH as the long ride was not signed! Net result
was we missed #1. I was last Then down the sustrans which is the grand
union canal tow path. I misread the turn and we all went down to the 3
locks pub #3. Which put in an extra 3 miles by all accounts. Then we lost
Neil - he rode on while we decided what to do. Back on track up to
through Great Brickhill and up to Little Brickhill. Mike M strong man as
ever. Neil returned the phone call Colin had made, upset.... - he was
livid. Colin agreed we'd meet him down at Sand Pit, which I found on the
map.
We continued on to #2, then met with Sparky Dave who was doing the slower
ride. We left him but he later caught and left us behind, cos we kept
stopping a lot. We met with Neil at Stockgrove Country Park. Then we were
all back on track. Down to 3 locks again! #3 twice. Then back to
Stockgrove, but this time continued on to Kings Wood and up to the Fox pub
in the A5. Straight over and fork left through a very greasy section down,
slippy slidy #4. Stop for lunch I think there. Then up towards Woburn
itself and then up a track to come out at the bottom of the cutting on the
A5130. Neil decided not to do the next loop, which was into what Colin
calls the warm up. Had the sand been hard it might have been, I found it
really hard going, like riding on the soft sand on a beach. #5. Met up with
Neil, drop down to Woburn and up the Knarly Climb through Aspley Heath to
Woburn GC. Regroup, then again dropping all the way back down into the
"Bog of Eternal Stench". This time it was a very Greasy slide down sideways
mostly. #6. Especially hard as many many riders had already done this bit
the other way and back up it later! Huge footholes in thick sticky clay
mud. The Bike wheels wouldn't turn when we finally dragged ourselves to the
top. Then down to the church. Game over, run out of 10pences. 35.2 miles
done on a 31.2 miles course. But it was great fun. Losing Neil caused great
angst for Colin, and my map reading error I think got the blame for every
mishap that came later as well. 3:20 moving time, travel time 4:30.
